These are the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for UNH Mailman list subscribers. Mailman provides self-service tools for managing your own subscription to lists hosted on this server.

A FAQ file is a living document. If you do not find your question here, or if the question is not answered adequately, please let us know by sending an email message to List.Admin@unh.edu.

NOTE: We'll use the fictitious list name 'White.Water.Waves' (a discussion list for white water rafting enthusiasts) in all of the examples below. You will want to substitute the actual name of a list in all lowercase wherever you see "white.water.waves" in these examples.

Q-00: Is there a manual for subscribers?

You bet! Mailman offers subscribers a lot of features for managing their own subscription. It's all covered in the Mailman List Member Manual (PDF).

Q-01: How do I know what lists are available?

See the UNH Mailman list of lists page. However keep in mind that new mailing lists are hidden by default, and it is the decision of each individual list owner if their list should be made visible to the world. Where many lists have subscriptions by invitation only, it is not unusual for a list to remain hidden. You are welcome to contact the Mailing List Server Admin (List.Admin@unh.edu) with a brief note about the kind of list you are looking for.

Q-02: How do I subscribe to a Mailman list?

Either of these subscription methods should work: You will receive a confirmation email regarding your request. Watch for it in your mailbox to complete the subscription process. Keep in mind that with both methods you are submitting a request to subscribe. Most of our lists require the list owner's approval for all new subscriptions.

If neither of the above methods work for you, contact the list owner for help. The list owner address is the list name with "-owner" appended. Using our example, that would be:

        white.water.waves-owner@lists.unh.edu
You can also find the owner email address(es) listed at the bottom of the list's home page.

Q-03: How do I unsubscribe from a Mailman list?

Either of these sign-off methods should work: You will receive a confirmation email regarding your request. Watch for it in your mailbox to complete the sign-off process. This confirmation step is required to make sure that it is really you making the request and not some prankster.

If neither of the above methods work for you, contact the list owner for help. The list owner address is the list name with "-owner" appended. Using our example list name, that would be:

    white.water.waves-owner@lists.unh.edu

Q-04: How do I find which lists I am subscribed to?

To do this, you will need the name of at least one list that you know you are subscribed to, and your list password (but don't worry if you forgot it.)
  1. Go to the subscriber option page for list that you know.

  2. Enter your subscriber email address and your password for that list. If you don't remember your password, use the "Remind" button to have it emailed to you.

  3. Find the "List my other subscriptions" button.

Note that Mailman will only send a password reminder message to a known subscriber address. If you have more than one address and you enter one that is not on a UNH list, Mailman will not complain, but it won't send the reminder either. If you are stuck, contact your friendly neighborhood List Server Admin at List.Admin@unh.edu and we'll try to help.

Q-05: How do I change my subscription options?

Log into your subscriber option page for the list in question.

Q-06: How do I reset my subscription password?

Log into your subscriber option page for the list in question.

Look for the password changing boxes on the right-hand side of the page.

Q-07: How do I contact the owner of a list?

Send email to the special list owner address:
    white.water.waves-owner@lists.unh.edu

Q-08: What are mail list archives?

All of the postings sent to a Mailman list can be saved as archives which are accessible via the web. Not all Mailman lists at UNH have archives, this is up to the individual list owner. Archives can be either private -- visible only to subscribers, or open to the world. Mailing list archiving is not unique to Mailman. As a subscriber it is a good idea to always be mindful about what you post to any mailing list. Your posting might just live forever on the Internet in some archive.

Q-09: What is digest format?

Normally you will receive postings sent to the list as soon as they are received by Mailman. For very busy lists, this can result in a stream of potentially distracting email messages throughout the day. You have the option of setting your subscription to "digest mode" which bundles multiple posts into a single email message which is sent, typically, only once a day. To turn this feature on or off, go to your subscriber options page:

You'll need to know your subscriber email address and password to change this setting.
